SCOTTISH DISABILITY EQUALITY FORUM
♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ CVS Stirling in partnership with The Scottish Disability Forum re-launched the Stirling Area Access Panel (SAAP), in June 2007. The new grouping made up from a host of voluntary, community and individual members, meet monthly to take forward all access issues affecting Stirling Council Area. Recently SAAP held a very successful Away Day, which looked at the roles and functions of the group. The Panel’s mission statement is: ‘To promote self empowerment and enable access for all in order to realise their full potential in all aspects of life’. The SAAP currently has an Admin base in the CVS Stirling offices, CVS Stirling support this group to achieve its aims and operates a secretariat function, which is necessary, as currently the Panel do not have any paid employees. The Panel is established for charitable objectives and purposes only.
In particular, the Panel is established to advise and assist in the creation and maintenance of access provision for all people through the Stirling Council area, with reference to buildings, countryside, open space, the environment, services and access approaches in general.
To progress these objectives the panel intend:-
The Panel consists of a range of people experiencing access problems, and with an interest in the work of the Panel. At present the Panel meet on a monthly basis. Membership is open to all people experiencing access difficulties and to others with an interest in access issues. At present SAAP is involved in a Secret Shopper Project. This involves Panel members, working in pairs, visiting businesses and organisations to gauge how accessible they are for the elderly, disabled people, mothers with pushchairs, people with mental health issues, etc. The members are not only looking at accessing a building but also accessibility to services and up to date information. The Panel are currently drawing up a pro-forma that can be completed on every Secret Shopper Visit which will ensure consistency of information.
